Artist Statement
Through the simultaneous representation of tangible sensory experience and the falsity of staging, my practice operates in destabilized curiosity.
My work begins with the conceptual collaging of particular visual and sensory landmarks. We all share an overarching language of sensory input accessible through only human experience. After pulling from this cache of sensory memory, a motivated concept eventually emerges somewhere in the differences and commonalities of these memories.
These landmarks allow me to explore the concept of staging and artifice with an acute awareness of physical sensation. The premeditated, sometimes even theatrical presentation of the images I paint evokes a stiffness that is both awkward and familiar. This falsity is represented in tandem with the most real things we can relate to: smell, touch, and sight. The destabilization that occurs in their unison creates the landscape in which my work plays.
